Common Non-Ferrous Metal Sputtering Targets and their Uses
Metal sputtering target materials that are termed as Non-ferrous are include the following: cobalt, titanium, aluminum, chromium, zinc, led and some of the precious metals. These are all metals that lack iron as a component of their making.
These metals have a common characteristic which is simply the fact that they are very limited. They are however very useful in the industrial sector of an economy.
These are some of the non-ferrous metals and their industrial uses.
Aluminum is very important in the transport sector. It is used in the manufacturing process of car engines, cylinder heads, transmission housing and body panels. Additionally, aluminum is used to manufacture airplane parts and railway stock.
In the construction industry it is used in the manufacture of roofing materials for houses. And wall cladding.
For the sake of packaging, aluminum is used in the form of alloy sheet for beverage can bodies and tops. It is also used as foil for household and commercial food wraps.
Due to its property of good conduction of electricity, aluminum is usually used in the energy sector for the making of electric wires after it has been reinforced with steel.
Titanium is usually a very strong metal but at the same time a light metal. This makes it very useful in the manufacture of airplanes that require strong and at the same time light metals.
Titanium is also used in the making if drills that are used in the drilling of wood, soft metals and plastics.
It is also used in the building of watercrafts and submarines due to its property of very high resistance to the process of rust formation.
Chromium is one of the transition metals in the periodic table. It is very tough and thus has a great resistance to heat and corrosion. It is required as a trace element in the human body. Chromium is used as a color yellow pigment. It is also used in the making of synthetic rubies. Chromium oxide is also used in the imparting of the color green in glasses that are mostly used in the construction of churches. Salts of chromium are used in the preserving of wood due to their toxic property. These same salts are also used in the process of leather tanning.
Cobalt was used as a coloring agent long ago by the Egyptian artisans. It is used in the making of jewelry and coloring paints. It is also used in the production of other strong alloys. It is also used in imparting the blue color in glass. It is radioactive and thus used in the production of Gamma rays.
